An open letter to the parents of HKUST students

Dear parents,

The recent situation in Hong Kong with sustained transport disruptions and escalating violence have caused inconvenience to the safety, learning and lives of many students. Concerns of the parents are shared by the University.

Students’ safety is of utmost importance to us. Since yesterday, the University has arranged special transportation services to assist those who wish to leave the campus.  The University has been introducing various means including online teaching and mobile classroom to enable students to continue their learning in a safe environment and to minimize the impact on their studies arising from the social unrest. The University will try its best to address the needs of the faculty members and students living on the campus, be it in regard to safety or daily lives. Teachers of HKUST maintain close communication with their students and relevant administrative offices will provide all necessary assistance.

The University has also received staunch support from alumni and friends from different sectors to provide transportation, accommodation, learning and internship assistance to students in need.  Our common goal is to ensure that our students and friends can be away from danger, and students’ learning can resume normal so that they can graduate from their studies.

HKUST has been closely monitoring the latest development of the situation in Hong Kong, and would offer further information and support to all students and friends in a timely manner.

Sincerely yours,
