While the Ring Doorbell can send you alerts if anyone actually rings it by pressing the button, you can also receive alerts whenever motion is detected. Unfortunately, it isn’t perfect. Here’s how to adjust the sensitivity of that motion.

The Ring Doorbell uses infrared technology to determine if motion is by a person or not, but it can still invoke a lot of false positives. For instance, the heat signature from a passing car can set off an alert, but by adjusting the sensitivity and distance that the Ring Doorbell can detect, you can cut down on false alarms and zone in on the Ring’s detection field.

To adjust the sensitivity of the Ring’s motion detection, start by opening up the Ring app on your phone and tapping on your Ring Doorbell at the top of the screen.

Tap on “Motion Settings”.

Select “Zones and Ranges”.

On this screen, you can select which zones you want enabled for detection and how far out you want the detection to reach. To enable or disable a certain zone, simply just tap on it.

After that, use the slider on the left-hand side to adjust how far out you want the motion detection to reach.

A pop-up will appear that says to push the button on the Ring Doorbell to save and confirm the changes. Do this and then press “Continue”.

Next, tap on “Smart Alert”.

Adjusting this setting will tell Ring how sensitive you want the Ring’s motion detection to be. For instance, if you’re doing outside work on your house in front of your porch where your Ring Doorbell is, setting this to “Light” would only give you a few alerts, while “Frequent” would send you a bunch of alerts. When you select one, hit “Save”.

That’s all there is to it! If, after you adjust the motion sensitivity, you’re still receiving false alarms, try toning down the sensitivity even more. For me, I had to pretty much turn it all the way down to its lowest setting before it would finally stop giving me false positives, but your mileage may vary.
