Mike Cohn:
Say something once, why say it again?
Do you ever get tired of repeating yourself? I do. I do indeed.
One of my favorite bands was Talking Heads, who were very successful in the 1970s-80s.The music was great but the band also had great lyrics. One of my favorite lines from their songs is “Say something once, why say it again?”
Not repeating oneself seems such a logical plan. But saying something once is insufficient for important communication within an agile team or organization.
If you need to communicate something important, it needs to be said multiple times. Did you notice how I just repeated myself but that I did it by phrasing the point a bit differently?
Suppose a sudden change in your organization affects your team. Maybe a pivot requires them to work on different functionality. Or maybe the sudden change means the team will need to work overtime for a week or two.
Tell the team why these changes are needed. And then repeat that message a few times, over the coming days or weeks.
You don’t need to always use the same words. And don’t start by saying, “As I’ve said before…” If you start that way, it’s a big cue that we don’t need to listen to whatever comes next (since you’ve said it before).
In this time of unprecedented change, it’s quite likely you need to communicate new messages to your teammates. It’s also likely they’re overwhelmed, making listening harder than it usually would be. Repeating important messages will help them succeed with agile,
