Wavedash Games, a studio that has their foundation in the grassroots scene of platform fighters, are developing their first title, Icons: Combat Arena, a love letter to the community they stem from.

At EVO 2017, the fighting game community and the world finally got to see Icons: Combat Arena, the result of just over a year of concepting and development.

The studio came together with Matt Fairchild and Jason Rice, who are pushing their first decade in game development. The two have been crafting the team of Wavedash Games with other experienced game designers, developers, artists, and veteran esports players such as Adam Oliver, Wesley Ruttle, Michael Maurino, Joshua Singh, and Will Hsaio. Since starting Wavedash, they have grown from two to over 20 employees alongside the $6Million in funding they announced earlier this year.

After a year of hard work and dedication you can now watch their first official gameplay trailer, seen below. It showcases their twist on the now iconic platform fighter genre mixed with their beautiful visuals. During the trailer, you can see the high speed gameplay they are pushing for, a diverse starting roster, and all the workings of a competitive game worthy of being shown on the world’s largest fighting game stage.

“We knew that to make a great game, we had to playtest with our community ASAP,” said Matt Fairchild, Wavedash’s CEO and Cofounder. “Thanks to Unity, we had a playable prototype in less than a month, and then had all of Unity’s tools to polish and refine. We couldn’t have achieved that combination of rapid prototyping and high production quality with any other engine.”
